The Apatin commune is settled on the utmost West of Vojvodina, or, precisely in the west area of Bačka, on the 45 ° 45’ north geographic latitude, and 18 ° 59’ east geographic longitude. Apatin is located on the left side of big, international river Danube (“blue European highway”, as it is called). Except this natural, western frontier, The Apatin commune borders on with the Sombor commune in the north, and the Odžaci commune in the south and south-east.

By its size, Apatin can be classified as middle large municipality in region. Apatin is located on the left side of big, international river Danube (“blue European highway”, as it is called). Because of that reason, it has a very good geographical position which is one of the most favorable potentials of this municipality.

Except this natural, western frontier, The Apatin commune borders on with the Sombor commune in the north, and the Odžaci commune in the south and south-east. Although Apatin the town is an administrative, economic, educative and cultural center, commune includes 4 villages around it – Svilojevo, Kupusina, Prigrevica and Sonta.

Danube by Apatin's Side

Apatin, the town, and the entire commune lay on the north part of river Danube, on its course through Serbia. In the territory of the Commune, Danube enters on the exactly on 1.367 km from its spring, and leaves it in 1.409,5 km from spring, so that precise length of “Apatin’ s section” is 42 km. On this section, the level of river falls slightly down - 51 cm per km from the national border to the mouth of river Drava. Due to this fact, River flows very slowly (at Apatin’s section, speed of Danube is 1,5 – 2,0 m/s). If the level of water is very high, Danube changes its bed, and creates numerous developed meanders. When the entire system of defensive embankments was lift up, many of meanders were cut down from the main river course, and become stagnate tributary.

Maximal height of water level by Apatin’s coast was registered at the 25 tJun 1965 and amounted 825 cm. On the other hand, the minimal level of Danube - 118 cm, was measured at 7 January 1909. Average weight of Danube at Apatin’s section is 750 m (if the height of water level is 4,50m) and average depth is 15 m (minimal one was measured in Stari zimovnik -2,20 m, and maximal one at Ribarska centrala - 32 m) .

The temperature value changes over the year, from minimal 0 ° C (from the January to the March) to maximal 25,6 ° C (during the July)
